“Music for Piano Trio” I. Intro II. Türk Çıkartması III. Ağırlama IV. Süit Program Note: The piece consists of an intro followed by three sections. Beginning with a hesitant intro, the music seems to be trying to tell us its story, but the first section follows immediately, attacca. The intro, however, returns in a different form in the final section of the piece. Much like the way our sense of “self” may prove insufficient in the beginning, only to re-emerge in another form after we have internalized other characters. Türk Çıkartması, with its imposing, C-centered structure, establishes a solid and powerful foundation for the music. The modes contained within it are in a constant state of conflict among the three instruments. Harmonically compatible, yet within the phrases they fight against one another, each struggling to express itself and to tell its own story. Much like us as human beings. The following section, Ağırlama, speaks to us with confidence and measured, heavy steps. It follows the path of a dervish who carries a burden, searching for a remedy, and ultimately takes us under its sway, just as the music itself embraces and hosts us. The effective motifs heard throughout Ağırlama gradually reappear toward the end of the section in rhythmic forms. The final section of the piece, Süit, is the formalized manifestation of the bass parts first heard in the Intro. The hesitant, distant-sounding opening of the music returns in a completely different form, leading us into a modal and motivic dance—at once half-ironic and half-playful, with a subtly flirtatious character.
