"In memory of Edith Cavell" by Hamal Baroni Edith Cavell was an English nurse who during the First World War indiscriminately treated wounded soldiers on both sides and organized the escape of many Allied soldiers from the borders of then-German-occupied Belgium. This composition is in four movements, each part narrating a phase in the story of Edith Cavell: 1st movement - The musical atmosphere introduces the dramatic situation of those times during the First World War where Edith worked, a time of anguish, suspicion, and fear of discovery. 2nd movement - It tells of herself, her work, caring for the wounded, both German and English, helping them escape, then the drama of being discovered, and the events that followed, leading to her conviction and the firing squad. 3rd movement - It describes the awakening of her soul in an unknown, celestial world, but also the sudden awareness of death. 4th movement - Memories, nostalgia for the life just past, sadness and bitterness at having witnessed the atrocities of war and the miseries of humanity. Towards the end the atmosphere becomes grave, serious, a celestial warning resounds and concludes with a ray of light that makes her fly away.
