Henry G Li

Henry Li is a violist currently studying at Jericho High School and in the Juilliard Pre-College Division, where he studies with renowned violist Toby Appel. Under Professor Appel’s mentorship, Henry has developed not only technical refinement but also a deeper understanding of musical interpretation, phrasing, and the expressive possibilities of the viola. Appel’s guidance has encouraged Henry to approach music with greater artistic curiosity and sensitivity, shaping the way he listens, analyzes repertoire, and communicates musical ideas through performance. Henry is an active member of both the Juilliard Pre-College Symphony and the Jericho High School Orchestra, where he regularly performs in orchestral and chamber settings.

Henry began his formal pre-college training at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, which he entered in sixth grade. During his two years there, he built strong orchestral and ensemble foundations and served as principal violist of the Manhattan School of Music Concert Orchestra from 2021 to 2023. He has also served as principal violist of the Jericho High School Orchestra, developing both leadership and collaborative skills within ensemble performance.

An enthusiastic performer, Henry enjoys exploring both solo and chamber repertoire and has participated in numerous music festivals and competitions. In 2024, he was awarded Second Prize in the Prima Volta Summer Competition.

Among the works that have most shaped his musical perspective is William Walton’s Viola Concerto, whose lyricism and emotional depth continue to influence his interpretive approach. Through his studies and performances, Henry strives to deepen both his technical mastery and expressive artistry, while sharing the power of music with others.
