Ruyao Tang

Ruyao (Elena) Tang, aged 16, is a Grade 10 student at Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School. With systematic professional training since childhood, her performance combines solid technical control with delicate lyrical sensitivity. She specializes in Romantic and Classical repertoire, and holds the artistic belief that the inherent emotion of music should be delivered through restrained and sincere interpretation. In terms of professional progression, she has steadily built a comprehensive musical foundation through standardized training. In 2021, she passed the ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance and Grade 5 Music Theory examinations both with Distinction, and obtained the ABRSM Grade 7 Flute Performance certificate in the same year. In 2023, she earned the ABRSM Level 4 Diploma in Music Performance (ARSM) with Distinction, marking her advancement from technical proficiency to mature artistic interpretation. Competition experience has been a core driving force for her artistic growth. In 2025, she won the Gold Award in the Young Artists Group at both the China Regional Round and the London Finals of the UK International Piano Competition. She was also invited to perform The Ludlows alongside the Royal Academy of Music Orchestra, gaining invaluable dual experience in solo performance and orchestral collaboration on an international stage. In 2024, she received the Gold Award in Junior Group A at the China Semi-Final of the 5th Franz Liszt International Youth Piano Competition and advanced to the National Final. Her in-depth study of Liszt’s works has shaped her mature personal insight into balancing poetic expression and virtuosity in Romantic piano repertoire. In stage practice, she has served as Principal Pianist of the Shanghai International Youth Orchestra since 2021, participating in annual concerts, charity tours and other major performances, with well-honed skills in orchestral collaboration and ensemble listening. She is also an experienced chamber musician, having performed a diverse range of ensemble works including Shostakovich’s Four Waltzes, Piazzolla’s Libertango, and Sakamoto’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. She has always believed in the empathetic power of music. She has long participated in charity concerts for critically ill children, and launched a public welfare music project in 2025 to convey warmth through piano performance. She treasures the opportunity to exchange ideas in this competition, and looks forward to presenting her musical understanding with polished performance, and growing through interactions with the jury and fellow young musicians.
