To Express Myself and Communicate Who I Am
Twelve-year-old Romanian pianist Morosanu Carla Gabriela reflects on how emotional connection and inner strength shape her relationship with music.

At twelve years old, Romanian pianist Morosanu Carla Gabriela is developing her craft at the George Enescu National Music College in Bucharest under the guidance of teacher Cristina Maria Ralea. Following top awards at international competitions, including the Mozart and Beethoven competitions, she balances disciplined practice with a natural warmth and emotional clarity at the keyboard. In this interview, she discusses her early beginnings, her admiration for Beethoven and Martha Argerich, and her dreams for the stage.
When did your journey with the piano begin, and what made you fall in love with the instrument?
My journey in the piano world started when I first touched the keys at the age of five. Gradually, I fell in love with the instrument because of the way it lets me express myself and communicate who I am.
Do you have a favourite piece or composer right now? What do you enjoy most about their music?
One of my favourite composers is Beethoven because his music transmits pure emotion. Despite being deaf, he continued to compose, and for me, he is an example of perseverance and inner strength. I also like Romantic composers—they are close to my soul and help me express and share my feelings.

Your performances are full of expression and confidence. When you practice, what helps you feel the music and make it come alive — do you imagine stories, pictures, moods, or something else?
All these results have an important impact on my development. Every prize is a confirmation of my hard work and passion, motivating me to keep going and push beyond my limits.
What is a piece of music or a project you are most excited to try next?
I naturally feel the music, but my piano teacher, Cristina Maria Ralea, tells me about the work and the composer, helping me understand the story behind the music. For me, expression comes from the way I feel and live music.

Many young pianists look up to musicians they admire. Do you have a favorite pianist or musical inspiration? What do you admire most about them?
Yes, I deeply admire Martha Argerich; she really inspires me. I admire her technique, her musicality, and the depth of her interpretations the most.
Outside of competitions and practice, what brings you joy? Do you have hobbies or interests that help you relax or inspire your music?
My hobby is listening to as many concerts as possible because it relaxes and inspires me, helping me experience the strong emotions and feelings of the performer.

Looking ahead, what are your dreams as a pianist? Is there a piece you would love to perform, a stage you hope to play on, or a goal you wish to reach?
My goal is to become a very fine pianist and play on famous stages alongside great orchestras and conductors. I would love to perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 and, through my interpretation, inspire and bring joy to the audience.
